FTSE rises through 14-year peak

FXStreet (Mumbai) - The London’s Ftse index rose to a high of 6957.30, breaching the 15-year closing high of 6930 levels. The level was last seen just ahead of the dot-com bubble in 2000.

The index has also breached the intraday high of December 1999 at 6950.60. However, the gains have been erased, on the back of sharp declines in the Banking stocks and Mining stocks. The Ftse index now trades 0.12% lower at 6906.80 levels.

Among stocks, HSBC is down 5.20%, followed by a 2.27% fall in Fresnillo. Shares in Standard Chartered fell 2.02%, while those in Randgold and Tullow Oil are down 2.08 and 1.74% respectively. On the other hand, Lloyds is up 1.76%, followed by a 1.765 gains in Bunzl. Shares in Pearson are up 1.55%, while those in London Stock Exchange are up 1.54%. Astrazeneca gained 1.27%.

The Ftse Bank index is down 2.21% and the Mining index is down 1.21%. The losses in the index are being capped to some extent by the Telecom index; up 0.64%, and Media stocks; up 0.96%.
